Internet Child Safety |
 |
 |
IS
YOUR
CHILD BEING
STALKED ON
THE INTERNET? |
|
 |
| Should
YOU Be Concerned? |
|
Do you really know what your kids are doing
on the Internet?
|
| Scary
Statistics |
|
| |
 |
| Here
are some helpful tips |
|
|
 |
Learn
the "facts of life" yourself
so you can teach the kids.
|
 |
Where possible,
spend time "surfing the web" with
your kids, so they can learn from you what
is safe and appropriate behaviour. When
doing this, talk to your kids about why
you have taken a specific action. If your
kids are older, they will not want you to
"baby-sit" them on the Internet,
so talk to them about the dangers.
|
 |
Teach your
kids not to divulge any personal information
to anyone they meet in chat rooms or otherwise
anonymously on the Internet.
|
 |
Tell them
that you can not trust anyone on the Internet
to be whom or what they say they are.
|
 |
Make sure
your kids know that they must never arrange
to meet anyone they encounter on the Internet.
It simply is not safe to do so.
|
 |
Tell your
kids that they must not respond in anyway
to messages they receive that are offensive
or threatening. Encourage them to show you
anything they receive of that nature.
|
 |
Don't take
this the wrong way, but don't trust your
kids (especially teenagers) not to view
pornography or chat freely to people they
think they know. It is human nature and
you just can't change that, so you need
to be pro-active in protecting them.
|
 |
Install
software that prevents access to undesirable
web sites. Someone once said "a picture
is worth a thousand words" and how
true that is. Believe me, there are images
and videos freely available on the Internet
(even if you're not looking for them) that
will corrupt and endanger innocent minds.
|
 |
Install
monitoring software that lets you see everything
your kids see, read or type. It may seem
like "Big Brother", but brother
how bad will you feel if your child is abducted,
abused or murdered by someone they met anonymously
on the Internet.
|
 |
When selecting
monitoring software, beware; this is basically
spyware - you know, the stuff we spend most
of our time trying to get rid of. Be certain
the software you install does not send the
recorded information to anyone other than
you! Even then, don't use that machine to
conduct on-line banking - just in case.

| Internet
Monitoring |
|
For most families,
it is not practical to sit with the kids when
they use the Internet, so we recommend that
you monitor your children's online activity
using the latest technology available. In most
cases, monitoring software secretly runs under
windows when your computer starts up, extracts
text from Internet applications and records
every keystroke on your computer without slowing
it down or changing it's performance.
To help you
choose an Internet monitoring package that is
safe to use, we research and test software so
you don't have to. Here are two packages you
can buy online: |
| Product |
| Online
Recorder 5.74 - £20*
This spy
software lets you monitor web sites visited,
emails, chat, instant messages, and more.
With a built in keylogger, you can also
secretly record keystrokes.
(Works

This product is recommend by protectkids.org

All items record simultaneously, secretly
saving the data to a hidden location on
the PC. Additionally, this software includes

| Content
Filtering (Blocking) |
You
and your kids may not be trying to find pornography,
but the providers of this material will do anything
to get you onto their websites. They masquerade
as innocent websites to lure as many visitors
as possible.
Software can be used to filter out harmful websites
from being accessed on your computer.
|
Safe
Eyes - £35* per Year 3 PC Licence
Safe Eyes is
an excellent parental control utility, offering
great value for money as the manufacturer you
are permits you to install the software on upto
three computers in your home. It offers everything
you would expect from parental control software;
blocking inappropriate web sites and chat programs,
controlling which programs can use the Internet,
limiting the time users spend online etc. It
can even send you a text-message alerts when
someone tries to do something that you have
configured the system to prevent. The user accounts
are stored on the Safe Eyes web site, which
means it can be used on multiple computers and
you can manage everything remotely. While it
is always possible for new web sites to bypass
the content filtering database, overall we believe
that this is the best content filtering product
available at this time.
(Works on Windows
98, ME, 2000, XP and Mac)
The 2006 Version of this software was voted editors
choice in a PC Magazine review.
